Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Zagos has developed an indicator-based valuation method for patents with the aim of uncovering hidden values and future potential. How can you evaluate a patent? "You can think of it like the valuation of a property, where there are different indicators and there is a database of property values that can be used to estimate the value of a property very well. And you can imagine it the same way with patents." But can patents also be compared, the patent on paper vs. in reality in the economy? A patent is also a future value, so how is a patent assessed in terms of sustainability? "At Mercedes-Benz, for example, you can already see in your patent portfolio that they had already said goodbye to the combustion engine in 2013." Patents as an asset class are also available as an ETF.
